Salvador was born in Mexico, grew up in Texas and received his journalism education at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University in Phoenix. There, he earned his master's and bachelor's degrees in journalism and completed a specialization in business reporting. During his college years, Salvador interned for The New York Times, The Arizona Republic and the Houston Chronicle. Salvador is a native Spanish speaker, he studied Portuguese while in college, reaching an intermediate level, and he is currently learning Italian. While in school, Salvador was also one of the founders of the Downtown Devil, an online publication he started with his friends in early 2009 and led as executive editor for nearly three years. As a student, Salvador was selected as a 2011 Chips Quinn Scholar, and in 2010 he was chosen to participate in The New York Times Student Journalism Institute.
