Previously, Robert covered China and Mongolia in his role as Bloomberg News' Beijing bureau chief, and was also based in Indonesia and Canada as a Bloomberg journalist with a focus on the finance, mining, and energy sectors. Graduate research that Robert conducted at Toronto Metropolitan University focused on Chinese diplomatic rhetoric and obstacles to communication between Western and Chinese cultural and linguistic environments. Robert also published The Wounded Muse, a novel based on the disappearance of a documentarian in Beijing in 2006.
