Claim your profileRebecca Rivas is a multimedia reporter for The Missouri Independent, a nonprofit investigative newsroom covering state government, politics and policy in Missouri.As a contributor for Reveal at The Center for Investigative Reporting in 2021, Rivas leaned into the question of “Why police reform fails” — a project that was a finalist for a duPont-Columbia Award. As a Ida B. Wells fellow with Type Investigations, Rivas revealed inequities in St. Louis’ police surveillance program.Originally from El Paso, TX, Rivas now lives in St. Louis and has been reporting in Missouri since 2001. She previously reported at The St. Louis American, the nation's leading African-American newspaper, as well as Adelante!, a former bilingual newspaper in Columbia, Mo. As a Fulbright scholar, she investigated Peru’s high maternal-death rate among Andean women and produced a 45-minute documentary that has been used as an educational tool in college campuses nationwide.
