He previously worked as Editor at Large at Fortune magazine, where he began writing long pieces in 1996. He is the co-author of one book, author of two more, and a co-producer or associate producer of four documentary films directed by Alex Gibney, about Enron, Eliot Spitzer, Steve Jobs, and the blood-testing company Theranos. His honors include a 2012 Gerald Loeb Award (with Jennifer Reingold) for magazine writing, nomination as a 2016 Loeb finalist, the 2016 Society of Professional Journalists Award for investigative reporting in a national magazine, a 2015 New York Press Club prize for political reporting, and Henry R. Luce awards from Time Inc. in 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2016. He served as associate producer of "The Pirate of Prague," an eight-part Apple podcast from Blanchard House, which ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY in June 2024 included (#18) on its list of the 30 best true-crime podcasts of all time.
