A veteran conflict and political reporter, Newton has covered major geopolitical flashpoints, including wars in the Middle East, Kosovo, and the Balkans. She has reported from G8, NATO, and Commonwealth Summits, bringing clarity to high-stakes negotiations and shifting global alliances. In the lead-up to the UK’s 2016 election, she embarked on a groundbreaking live-reporting initiative, traveling by rail to engage directly with voters—offering real-time insights into the political climate through a cutting-edge mobile broadcast system. Newton joined CNN in 2005 following a distinguished 12-year tenure at Canada’s CTV, where she held prominent roles, including Moscow Bureau Chief and National Affairs Correspondent in Ottawa. Her career at CTV also saw her covering regional affairs in Halifax and Montreal, anchoring flagship news programs, and providing authoritative political commentary. Before that, she worked as an anchor and reporter for CHCH Television in Toronto and Atlantic Television News, beginning her journalism career as a parliamentary producer in Ottawa in 1986. Her reporting has earned widespread recognition, including two World Medals from the New York Festival—one for her investigative work on organ trafficking and another for her frontline coverage of the Kosovo war. She has also been honored with the Best Reportage Award at Canada’s Gemini Awards. Newton holds a MBA in International Finance from McMaster University and a Bachelor of Journalism & Political Science (Honours) from Carleton University. Fluent in English, French, and Italian, she also has conversational proficiency in Russian and Spanish, a testament to her global perspective and ability to connect across cultures.
