She is based in Austin and specializes in LGBTQ rights, crime and justice and government accountability. This year, she turns her sights to the state's most famous resident: Elon Musk.McGaughy leads the statewide investigative coverage for The Texas Newsroom, a collaboration of the NPR member stations in Texas. She has always approached her work with an eye to government accountability: who made the decision, why and how much will it cost?After 15 years in newspapers, she made the switch to public radio in late 2023. Before joining public radio, McGaughy worked for two newspapers in Texas and one in Louisiana. In Washington, D.C. she tapped her education in foreign affairs to cover the U.S. Department of State with a focus on U.S.-Sino and U.S.-Korean relations as an international stringer for the Japanese press.In her spare time, McGaughy takes photographs at cemeteries, hangs out with her cats and makes homemade costumes.
