Claim your profileI am a veteran journalist with 20 years in business writing.I focus on the interplay of politics, economics and technology, with an eye on consumer prices and energy's role in economic development. The promise and consequences of alternative energy sources, energy efficiency technologies and nuclear energy safety issues are some of the topics I regularly visit. In the last decade, energy generation and digital control technologies have developed quickly, keeping utilities, customers and the interstate power markets off balance. For example, the advent of shale gas, the deployment of highly efficient gas turbine power plants and the creation of real-time wholesale power markets have pressured coal and nuclear generation to the point of no return.Incremental improvements in wind and solar generation technologies along with the expansion of megawatt-scale batteries point to an uncertain future for some traditional utilities. The adoption of electric vehicles and "smart" local distribution systems further complicate future business models.
