Rappler.com is a Philippine-based news website known for its critical reporting on human rights abuse and other attacks on the democracy in the country. My work primarily focuses on human rights and the culture of impunity. I've written investigative reports about the state of human rights in the Philippines and the plight of human rights defenders, especially under the administration of then-president Rodrigo Duterte. I've also written about propaganda networks by foreign countries, particularly China, in the Philippines. Through my reporting, I have documented the killings under violent war on drugs, its lasting impact on communities, the challenges faced by families and stakeholders in seeking justice for their loved ones, and the response of independent institutions, including the Philippines' Commission on Human Rights, the United Nations, the European Union, and the International Criminal Court, among others.I also host Newsbreak: Beyond the Stories, a weekly livestreamed show that aims to make sense of people, events, and controversies dominating the news cycle. It is also available on most podcast platforms.I obtained my journalism degree from the University of the Philippines Diliman and joined Rappler in 2014. My first assignment was to oversee Rappler’s #HungerProject, a platform that tackled poverty and malnutrition issues. I did field work, wrote stories on these issues, and collected data for tracking and decision-making for policies. The project also enabled me to engage with both local and international non-governmental organizations, including the World Food Programme, as well as government agencies such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development. My stories for this project have been tagged as finalist for various awards, including the Save the Children media awards.Message for anything and everything.jodesz.gavilan@rappler.comtwitter.com/jodeszgavilanhttps://www.rappler.com/author/jodesz-gavilan
