I have lived two professional lives, with a passion for both. Most obviously, my work experiences reveal extensive experience in both full-time community journalism (more than three years at a small daily and more than 18 years at weeklies), plus another year-and-a-half part-time at another small daily. Tack on another nearly 8 1/2 years working for three magazines, and I have a firm grasp of traditional print media as a whole. What is not obvious from those basic job experiences is my movement technologically over those years. I've grown from those early days at a typewriter to mastering editing systems more complex than many have experienced. I'm also active in social media -- mainly Twitter and Facebook, both personally and professionally. But I have another "career" not listed in my LinkedIn resume: Retail. Including experiences that began while I was still in high school, I have accumulated more than 20 years of part-time experience, including two national chains and two local hobby retailers. Somehow I have found the time for this second career interest, despite having a primary career interest known for its long hours. It's what I do.
