Claim your profileJeremiah Hassel is a journalist with over four years of student journalism experience and months of professional experience. He earned two Bachelors of Arts from The Pennsylvania State University in Journalism and Political Science and complemented them with a minor in French and Francophone Studies.During his time at Penn State's University Park campus, Hassel wrote and edited for The Daily Collegian, where he held the positions of administration reporter, features and investigations reporter, lifestyle editor, photographer, page designer and member of the digital team. In those roles, Hassel wrote about Penn State's administration, covered Penn State's underrepresented communities, honed his AP Style skills, photographed campus events including sports, became a leader in the newsroom, promoted content on social media, posted stories to the publication's website and designed pages for print publication.At Penn State Behrend, Hassel wrote and edited for The Behrend Beacon, where he held the positions of staff writer, features editor, news editor, photographer and page designer. He covered Penn State Behrend's administration, student government, clubs and organizations and its sporting teams. Hassel also reported on local politics and had the opportunity to cover Erie events. He edited content for multiple sections and led the newsroom's push for greater, more diverse content, having been in charge of overseeing content and page design for several pages in the print publication each week. For each story he wrote, Hassel took photos or produced his own art.In Hassel's senior year at Penn State, he had the opportunity to travel to Scotland with an international reporting class and produced one short-form and one long-form story.Hassel has also freelanced for the Centre Daily Times, worked as a sports stringer for The Erie Times-News and was the editor-in-chief of his high school newspaper. He also served as the social chair of Penn State's French Club and was a member of Penn State Behrend's Model United Nations team, Penn State's Language and Linguistics Club and Book Club.Hassel currently works as a reporter at the Westmore News, a hyperlocal newspaper in Port Chester, N.Y.. In that role, he covers school boards, community events and police arrests and writes the occasional feature story. He also photographs news and sporting events and manages the publication’s social media.
