Damien Sordelett covers Virginia Tech football for The Roanoke Times in Roanoke, Va. His responsibilities range from game stories, features, enterprise work, video and additional posts that enrich the coverage of Hokies football. He assists with coverage of Radford men’s basketball, the Salem Red Sox, Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs and high school sports. Recipient of Division III first-place award in the 2023 Virginia Press Association writing contest for sports writing portfolio.Prior to joining the Roanoke Times, Sordelett covered Liberty University athletics for The News & Advance in Lynchburg, Va. He covered the Flames from Dec. 2012 to July 2013, and then again from Sept. 2015 to March 2023. From July 2013 to Sept. 2015, he served as the beat writer for the Lynchburg Hillcats, the Cleveland Indians Class A-Advanced minor league affiliate in the Carolina League. He also helped with local golf and high school sports. Recipient of Division II third-place award in 2020 VPA writing contest for sports writing portfolio.Prior to his time in Lynchburg, Sordelett worked at the Danville Register & Bee. There, he covered every type of sporting event, including auto racing. He was the 2010 South Boston Speedway media center member of the year. Recipient of Division I first-place award in the 2011 VPA writing contest for sports writing portfolio.
