A representative of the Iowa Young Writers Workshop came to my grade school when I was eight years old. I was one of four candidates, out of 100-plus third-grade students, eligible to visit the University of Iowa Young Writer’s Workshop that summer. I studied journalism at the University of Iowa. Eager to start writing, I became an intern for the Knoxville Journal-Express in the summers before my sophomore and junior years, enhancing my skills by writing features and hard news articles, along with photographing feature and hard news images. While at the University of Iowa, I managed and reorganized the Kenneth and Muriel Greene Resource Center, where I discovered my love of helping others with research. The University of Iowa Summer Writing Festival has been a resource for career development. Courses I have taken are "Things that Go Bump in the Night"​ (gothic techniques), "Writing About Nowhere"​ (memoir), and Poses and Prose, a yoga and writing weekend seminar.My focus is writing community-minded articles that inform people about their friends and neighbors. Writing features for magazines and newspapers allows me to bring stories to the forefront of people's minds that they may not otherwise know, such as that of a young man whose life was changed in the blink of an eye by a traumatic brain injury. Writing articles for special sections allows me to give people more information than they would from an advertisement. These feature events, products and/or services.My professional path has also taken me into new media as a blogger, and I previously worked in new media as an online editor and inputter for eMedicine. The heart of journalism, and me, is helping others by telling their stories.
