Claim your profileI'm an editor and writer who focuses on stories about food, agriculture, and the related environmental and cultural issues. Previously, I spent 15 years as a media critic, running the newsroom at the Columbia Journalism Review. I got my start at a small daily newspaper (back in the pre-internet era), and have reported abroad in Eastern and Central Europe. My writing has appeared in places like The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Vox, Pacific Standard, The Nation, CNN, Lapham's Quarterly, and USA Today. My essays on food have been included in "The Best Food Writing" anthology, and my essay on journalistic objectivity was included in the collection, "100 Years of Radical Media Criticism." I won a Mirror Award in 2020 for a piece on the decline of local journalism in West Virginia, and what it means for the future of the state where I grew up.
