Prior to journalism, she spent two years at a DC think tank, where she focused on domestic Chinese media trends, building democratic resilience, and China’s influence on global media. She also spent three years in China, Myanmar, and Thailand, working at the intersection of international relations, human rights, and development, with roles at the UN Human Rights Regional Office in Bangkok, a Burmese research and advocacy group on the Thailand-Myanmar border, and Koe Koe Tech, a Yangon-based tech social enterprise focused on maternal health, combatting hate speech, and municipal governance. Bochen studied political science at Duke University as a Karsh International Scholar, where she led the Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit. She holds a Master’s in International Economics and China Studies from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, as well as a graduate certificate from the Hopkins-Nanjing Center. Bochen was born in China and immigrated to Canada at age 7.
