Projects and stories he produced have won awards including the American Society of News Editors' Deborah Howell Award for writing excellence, Columbia Journalism School's Dart Award for reporting on trauma, the American Society of Professional Journalist's Sigma Delta Chi award for feature writing, and Scripps Howard's Ernie Pyle Award for human interest storytelling. "America's Blind Spot," an investigation he co-edited, about bureaucratic negligence that allowed lethal drivers to remain on the road, won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting. A narrative about the impact of climate change on Cape Cod, "At the Edge of a Warming World," was a finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer for feature writing. “Chasing Bayla,” about a scientist’s quest to save an injured whale, was a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer for feature writing. With colleagues working coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing, he shares the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news. Numerous projects have appeared in anthologies, including The Best American Newspaper Narratives, The Best American Science and Nature Writing and The Best American Sports Writing. He is author of a book, “Silverado,” about President George H. W. Bush’s son Neil and a failed savings and loan where he served. Wilmsen plays bluegrass fiddle, is a fair cook and has a soft spot for wild places.
