Shamarria is a multimedia journalist in the Queen City covering education with a focus on equity, accountability, and underrepresented populations. She's created a new standard and lane for WCNC’s educating reporting in the market. Key education leaders are familiar and trust her work. Shamarria's articles have been shared by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, school board leadership, and education advocate groups. Since taking over the education beat at WCNC she's helped build a new and sustaining relationship with the communication team of several school districts that's led to competitive news coverage making a difference. Shamarria created meaningful relationships with stakeholders in education that are not transactional but are instead built-in respect, trust, and hard work. Shamarria has spoken to statewide public relations groups on the best practices to improve relationships with media. Her work is also heard on different platforms including the Charlottee NPR flagship's regional radio show Charlotte Talks. She is committed to making journalism accessible and connecting it to silenced voices. She believes passionate, relevant journalism starts in diverse newsrooms that reflect the communities they cover. Shamarria speaks nationally on the power of diversity, safety, and authenticity in newsrooms.
