During his tenure, the News 19 team earned numerous journalism awards and was recognized by community organizations for their reporting excellence. News 19 has been committed to community service and quality local journalism.News 19 has been recognized by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, The Associated Press, the Radio and Television News Directors Association, the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association, and others. Examples include four Regional Emmy Awards, including “Healers at Wounded Knee” and “Marching Orders” for community issue coverage and documentary. In 2019, the Wisconsin Public Health Association recognized News 19 for outstanding coverage of the ongoing opioid epidemic crisis in Wisconsin.In 2017, News 19 earned an Eric Sevareid award for the documentary special “Deluge in the Dark - The Flash Flood of 2007.” The RTNDA also recognized News 19 for excellence in documentaries, historical, and sports coverage. In 2011, News 19 took an in-depth look at the local legal justice system in La Crosse County. The work was recognized by the Wisconsin Bar Association for the best journalism and coverage in the entire state of Wisconsin, contributing to the public understanding of law and justice. In 2001, WXOW's news team earned Best Local Newscast in Wisconsin from The Associated Press for local coverage of the days after 9/11.Sean Dwyer has been a mentor to many reporters, producers, anchors, and photographers throughout his career. Many journalists began their careers at News 19, learning their craft, accuracy, integrity, and performance in the WXOW newsroom. These professionals now work in markets all over the country and overseas.Sean Dwyer is the past President of the Wisconsin AP Board of Directors, served on the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council, is a past member of the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Board of Directors, and is a current member of the WBA. He is a graduate of the Walker Management Institute. His community involvement includes being the past President of the La Crescent Community Foundation, past Chairman of the Children's Miracle Network funding committee, and a former member of the La Crosse YMCA Board of Directors. He was recognized by the Chileda Institute as a “Model Citizen”
