I've been an air reporter and presenter for BBC News for more than 25 years, investigating and breaking a wide range of stories, sometimes covering daily news. From 2023 I've been focussing on Family Courts, unearthing and reporting stories for BBC1 News BBC Online and the Today Programme. These Courts have the greatest powers to intervene in family life, but have been almost impossible to report before now. I've been trying since 2009. My recent work has made headlines - the story of Baby Elsa was reported round the world . It has changed the law to protect vulnerable children and encouraged the judiciary to extend their transparency pilot. With producer Katie Inman I was a finalist for the 2023 Orwell prizes and the British Journalism Awards. I also reported exclusively In July 2024 on the opening of the police file on one of Britain's most notorious unsolved murders - the killing of Antiguan Kelso Cochrane. My Radio 4 documentary the year before had explained why this case still matters. From 1997 and 2020, based on the Today Programme, I broke high profile exclusives on the Daniel Morgan case, Funding of Free Schools, Brexit, Corruption amongst prison officers, Child Abuse in the Church of England, and many more. I won/was shortlisted for national awards. My 2015 R4 programme "The Spy Left Out in the Cold" won a silver award in the New York Radio Festival. My 2013 Panorama: "After Savile- No More Secrets?", showed what the government had known for decades about Child Sex Abuse in institutions . It was based on my and Meirion Jones' research in the National Archives : where I also uncovered files on the last man hanged in Britain, and the Moors Murderer Ian Brady, my exclusive reports. I've also worked as a BBC Foreign Correspondent. I won an Open Scholarship at Oxford, and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Southern California.I enjoy public speaking. Over the last few months I've taken part in many conferences on journalism, transparency and family law, either as a panelist or keynote speaker. I have chaired panels at conferences and literary festivals too.
