Versatile writer and editor specializing in arts and culture journalism. Currently a contributing culture editor for SFGate's Los Angeles vertical, covering subcultures in California, and freelancing culture stories for other publications. Adjunct professor at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, teaching arts writing to graduate students specializing in arts and entertainment journalism.Formerly the Arts and Entertainment editor at The Los Angeles Times, a Senior Editor at Texas Monthly, a Digital Producer at Gothamist (WNYC's local news arm) and an Associate Editor of Atlas Obscura's food and drink vertical, Gastro Obscura. Co-founded and edited NPR Music's Turning the Tables, a project aimed at rewriting the canon of popular music with women and nonbinary artists at the center, which won a 2018 Gracie Award from the Alliance for Women in Media. My work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, New York Magazine, NPR Music, Rolling Stone, and many other publications. Wrote the liner notes essay for The Criterion Collection's release of 'The Rose' (1979). The author of a volume in Bloomsbury Press's 33 1/3 book series, about The Jesus and Mary Chain's seminal work 'Psychocandy,' published October 2016.Current Executive Committee Member of MoPop Conference and a mentor with both ASME Next and the Latinas in Journalism Mentorship Program.
