Claim your profileI’m a business reporter for Axios, where I'm the author of the Axios Closer newsletter, a Monday-through-Friday late-afternoon digest on the biggest business news and trends of the day. My previous roles include reporting positions at USA TODAY and the Detroit Free Press. Throughout my career, I've specialized in smoothly transitioning from rapid-fire stories to analytical journalism, in-depth enterprise projects and creative digital storytelling. I've covered a wide range of business news, including the automotive industry, bankruptcy, misinformation, the business of personal health and media. I also have experience in video and film scriptwriting and have made many on-air appearances on TV and radio networks and shows, including CNN, MSNBC, Fox Business, ABC's "Good Morning America," NBC's "Today Show," NPR, CBS News and Yahoo Finance. In addition, I have written three nationally published nonfiction books: —"Bridge Builders: Bringing People Together in a Polarized Age" (2021, Polity Press): "Bridge Builders" reveals transformational insights and stories on how public service, relationship building and conversation between people of difference can help us overcome some of the greatest challenges of our time. —"After the Fact: The Erosion of Truth and the Inevitable Rise of Donald Trump" (2018, Prometheus Books): "After the Fact" examines our society's increasingly tenuous commitment to the facts because of changes in journalism, social media, technology and politics -- and how these trends enabled Donald Trump to capture the White House. —"Detroit Resurrected: To Bankruptcy and Back" (2016, W.W. Norton & Co.): "Detroit Resurrected," which tells the inside story of the largest Chapter 9 bankruptcy in U.S. history, was hailed by the New York Times as "a valuable work of urban policy." Finally, I also served as the principal scriptwriter and producer for “Gradually, Then Suddenly: The Bankruptcy of Detroit.” The full-length documentary film by History Making Productions won the Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film, a $200,000 award given to a major U.S. history documentary that's near completion. It appeared in film festivals in Manhattan, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Detroit, Cleveland and Boston before debuting on streaming services in July 2024, including Amazon, Google Play, YouTube and Tubi.
