Claim your profileI have been a journalist for 25 years and I'm passionate about good stories. That means anything that makes me go "I didn't know that." What I love about journalism is that it constantly challenges my preconceived notions. I was a print business journalist for 14 years in San Antonio, New Orleans and Albuquerque. I had numerous scoops and award-winning stories. I covered numerous beats, including economic development, tribal business, tourism, the film industry and entrepreneurs. I also taught myself public radio as a volunteer and hosted Weekend Edition at KUNM. I produce interviews and a newscast on women's issues for Women's Focus on KUNM, because I'm passionate about getting more women into media. This is why I am a longtime member of the Journalism & Women Symposium and its former president. This passion was also the basis of my 2011 TED talk (see the link on my profile page). In 2012, I left full-time print work to produce and host a monthly show called Public Square on New Mexico PBS. Funded by the WK Kellogg Foundation, it explored numerous social and economic issues facing children and families in New Mexico. This allowed me expand my storytelling into areas about which I am deeply passionate. I also covered stories on the environment at KUNM and filed stories for LatinoUSA and NPR. At the end of the Public Square grant, I began producing the weekly public affairs show New Mexico in Focus, overseeing and also doing interviews and overseeing a revolving panel of journalists and pundits. With the resumption of our Kellogg grant, I did another season of Public Square, but the grant ended in 2015, so I moved into hosting Morning Edition on KUNM. I switched to All Things Considered in 2018. I also produce a monthly show for KUNM and I freelance for New Mexico PBS, podcasts, NPR and for several magazines. In 2018, I was a fellow with the Solutions Journalism Network. In July 2021, I became News Director at KUNM where I oversee a newsroom of seven, ranging from students, to industry veterans.
