I began my journalism career in 2007, when I studied media and music journalism at the University of Huddersfield. I worked both as a writer and photographer for music and film publications, including Zero Tolerance Magazine and shifts for Teletext Planet Sound. Struggling to find a full time journalism role, however, I used my spare time to develop my skills in photographic retouching using Photoshop, which eventually led me to get a job as a junior graphic designer. During this time, I had my first opportunity to work in non-linear video editing software, and I took an online course to learn the basics of Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects which I put into practice to produce short video ads for clients. After losing my job at the start of lockdown 2020, feeling that graphic design wasn’t quite the right fit for me, I decided to use my lockdown time to have another shot at a career in the media industry, and landed an apprenticeship at the Blackpool Gazette - where I had the opportunity to study for my NCTJ at the City of Portsmouth College. I had no idea where I fitted into the industry, but threw myself into trying different types of journalism. In early 2024 I moved on to National World’s central video team, which gave me the chance to develop my skills in video production. I have gained huge amounts of confidence in producing, filming and editing everything from 3 minute video segments to 30 minute documentaries, using a multiple camera set-up and making full use of lighting and audio equipment to get the best out of any video opportunity. My interviewing skills, nose for a story and genuine interest in people enables me to produce exceptional quality journalistic-style interviews and I love being able to get into the thick of the action and get really involved in a project and the world around me. My photographic eye helps me to get visually engaging b-roll from a range of different angles and perspectives to illustrate a narrative and create an emotional connection with an audience. My greatest achievement was making the final shortlist for Best Online Video category in the Press Gazette’s British Journalism Awards 2024, with my documentary Lured To Her Death - The Murder of Sasha Marsden.
