At the LA Times my work received two Gerald Loeb Awards for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism, a Scripps Howard Award for Business/Financial reporting, a Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing Award and a National Press Club Award. I reported with colleagues on California's troubled cannabis track record, and our series "Legal Weed, Broken Promises" was a finalist for the 2023 Pulitzer Prize. My reporting exposed how the state has failed to clear tens of thousands of old marijuana convictions, saddling people with criminal records that were supposed to be wiped clean; in response, the state passed a law that forced courts to take action. I have also investigated toxic fumes on airplanes, which led to the introduction of a bill in Congress to mandate safety measures. Previously, I reported for ProPublica on New York City’s private trash industry, exposing corruption, organized crime and the mistreatment of vulnerable workers, which led to a federal investigation and new city laws. I have reported for Harper’s, New Republic, The Nation and elsewhere. My series “Sexual Assault at God’s Harvard” won the Livingston Award in Local Reporting.
