Claim your profileI was born in Beeston, in mid-Norfolk, in March, 1944, one of a family of 10 children. My father worked on the farm opposite and many other members of my family were involved with agriculture. I attended the village primary school and passed the 11-plus examination in 1955. This took me to Hamond's Grammar School in Swaffham, biking to catch the train at Great Fransham for seven years, before entering the world of local newsappers. I worked in offices at Thetford, Dereham and Yarmouth before moving to Norwich as a sub-editor on the Norwich Mercury weekly series. I switched to sports journalism on both the Evening News and Eastern Daily Press , covering the fortunes of Nowich City Football Club for several seasons - and helping take them to the top flight for the first time! I became assistant sports editor for the EDP.I left local newspapers and after a year of varied activities, including straweberry picking, playing cricket and a stint with the Great Yarmouth Press Agency, joined BBC Radio Norfolk when it opened in 1980.
