James has earned a reputation for breaking big stories and shedding light on what industry insiders actually say and do, not what they write in press releases. He authored a widely-read newsletter for mortgage and real estate pros called Subscribers Digest and appears regularly on podcasts/web shows/ industry events as an expert on all things housing. He joined HousingWire in 2020 after leading the newsroom at The Real Deal. He left HousingWire in July 2025 to start his own mortgage-focused publication, called The Mortgage Scoop.
