Claim your profileHannah Hagemann is an award-winning journalist and the Science Editor at the San Francisco Chronicle. In this role she edits stories on scientific discoveries, climate change and extreme weather. Hannah also reports and writes in-depth stories that focus on how global warming is changing life for Californians. Previously, Hannah reported for the Santa Cruz Sentinel and the Bay Area News Group covering environment, science and wildfire impacts. Prior to that she worked for NPR as a Kroc Fellow. In that role Hannah reported for NPR, KQED and KAZU and covered the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex fire on the ground for the network. Hannah's stories have won numerous statewide and national awards, and been cited in scientific studies. Before beginning a career in journalism, Hannah worked as a geologist. She sampled and cleaned up industrial pollution across California with drill crews, railroad foremen and high-level regulators. That experience motivated her to return to UC Santa Cruz in 2018 to earn her master's in science journalism at the science communication program. She is a slug twice over, having earned her B.S. in environmental geology from UCSC.
