Worked in London, Hong Kong, again in Paris, and then Washington over the next 13 years with AFP, with short stints in Baghdad, Jakarta, Jerusalem, Moscow, and Port-au-Prince. Finished up as deputy desk chief for North America, running a team of editors covering North and South America. Spearheaded coverage of Barack Obama's 2012 re-election campaign. In 2015, I began working for IRIN, a humanitarian news agency set up 20 years previously by some smart folks at the UN who felt it might help prevent or mitigate future atrocities like the Rwandan genocide. In March 2019, IRIN relaunched as The New Humanitarian completing its transition from the UN to becoming an independent non-profit dedicated to reporting from the heart of crisis and putting the best journalism at the service of the most vulnerable people on Earth.
