I have a broad range of skills from writing fast and accurate news, to in-depth profiles and features, and a deep knowledge of the UK literary scene. I am currently comment and culture editor at the New Scientist, where I commission our opinion and culture coverage. I launched the popular New Scientist book club, which focuses on sci-fi novels, in May 2023. I also helped launch and host a residential event for sci-fi fans in November 2024: The art and science of writing science fiction. I review thrillers monthly for the Observer. I have judged literary prizes including the Baillie Gifford award for non-fiction and the Royal Society Science Book Prize in 2024, the Costa first novel award and the British Book Awards, and regularly chair book events.
